Judith Ellen Patterson Manning

Judie at Rob's wedding head shotDelloria and George "Pat" Patterson

Judith Ellen Patterson was born in Euclid, Ohio on March 10, 1941.  She later moved and was raised in Chardon, Ohio. She was the daughter of George Patterson and Dellora Lauter Patterson.   Her father worked for Lincoln Electric and her mother was in real estate.   Judie  had an older brother named David.  Eight years later, her younger sister Rebecca was born.  She also had a younger brother, Kevin who died of heart illness as a toddler.   As a child, Judie enjoyed being outdoors and playing in the snow.

Judie age 12-13The  family had a menagerie of animals as Judie was growing up; goats, chickens, horses, raccoons and even a skunk.  She was often responsible to help with their care and her fondness for animals grew.  She carried that love of animals throughout her life and had countless birds, cats, dogs, rodents, reptiles, and horses over the years.   She even opened a pet store and bought a farm so she could continue to indulge in her passion.

In her high school years, Judie was extremely popular.  Her nickname in high school was “Pitter.”  She was part of a group of 11 friends affectionately called “The Mottley Crew” who prided themselves on crazy pajama parties and adventures.  Judie participated in many activities during high school.  She was a member of the Glee Club, the Thespian Club, the Girls’ Athletic Association, the Yearbook Staff, the Echo Staff (school newspaper), the Drama Club, and the Girls’ Basketball team.  She also had the honor of being the Senior Class Vice President.

It was in Arlington that she met her future husband, Robert Manning, on a blind date.  She became a homemaker and they moved back to Chardon, Ohio.  She had three children, Kerry, Robert Jr. and Stephen.  Later she and her husband divorced.  She did an exceptional job of raising her kids.  Even though she worked hard to support them and made sure they had the best of everything, it was equally as important for her to spend quality time with them.

Judie was an outstanding business woman and owned several businesses in the Spartanburg area over the years.  She opened J & B Medical Store and Pharmacy on North Church Street.  Later, when she moved the store location to Reidville Road, she shortened the name to The Medical Store.  She also owned The Pet Store.  She was known for her great customer service and helped many people with their needs until she retired in 2004. She was loved by countless loyal patrons.  Judie Medical store

Judie  was a long time member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church and most recently attended Holy Communion Lutheran where she was involved in Family Promise. She was a choir member and looked forward to being a part of holiday cantatas.

005_5When Judie put her mind to it, she could do anything.  She had a knack for growing things and her homes and gardens were always filled with exquisite flowers and plants.  She had excellent culinary skills and family always enjoyed her delicious meals and homemade desserts.  Most holidays were spent laughing and storytelling around the dining room table.  Judie always adorned gifts with beautiful handmade bows.

Travel and adventure were things Judie treasured. She journeyed to Europe, British Columbia, Alaska and throughout the United States.  She enjoyed taking spontaneous road trips.   She took pleasure in being outdoors and in her younger years, she would go boating, scuba diving, shooting, hunting and even went sky diving once.  She appreciated being around all types of water and basking in the sun.  When she knew she was in her last days, one of her biggest wishes was to be able to see spring and go outside.

Judie will be remembered for her love of books.  For Christmas a few years ago, Judie was given a Kindle because she was such an avid reader.  She read 4-5 books each week.  She also enjoyed movies (especially science fiction) and British television shows.   She took pleasure in crossword puzzles and computer games.Judie 1969

Judie was always very tall and slender.  Her hair was extremely curly.  She delighted in shoes, clothes and accessories and as a result was very stylish.  Her friends and family will remember her as being a very elegant and sophisticated woman with a wonderful sense of humor and a deep love for her family.
